Ford Announces Major UK First with Revolutionary Electric Vehicle Platform

Ford has revealed a significant development in the electric vehicle market with the introduction of its Universal EV Platform, marking a UK motoring first. This innovative platform is designed to support an affordable family of electric cars, with a particular focus on a midsize four-door electric pick-up truck set to launch next year at a targeted starting price of around £22,000.

Affordable Electric Family Vehicles on the Horizon

The Universal EV Platform represents a key part of Ford's mission to create cost-effective electric vehicles that can compete globally, including with traditional gas-powered models. Ford has described this programme as "one of the audacious and important projects" in its history, emphasizing its commitment to making electric mobility accessible to a wider audience.

Alan Clarke, the Universal EV Platform and Product Leader, explained the strategic approach behind the platform's development. "In a low-cost vehicle, it can feel counterintuitive to increase the cost of a part just to decrease its weight," he said. "But if we can give that weight reduction a value in terms of the battery cost, then we can decide if making the part lighter and more expensive actually saves us money than adding an extra battery."

Integrated Design and Aerodynamic Advantages

Clarke, who also serves as executive director of Advanced EV Development at Ford, addressed potential skepticism by comparing this initiative to past innovations like the turbo on the F-150. "Other companies will claim that they've tried much of this before. But physics isn’t proprietary. We're creating a truly integrated electric vehicle platform, not a single part that can be easily copied," he stated.

He added that for the first time, customers will experience a fully electric vehicle charging ecosystem designed in-house by Ford using proprietary software, enhancing the overall user experience.

Saleem Merkt from Ford's aerodynamics department highlighted the performance benefits of the upcoming pick-up truck, noting that it will boast an impressive aerodynamic efficiency. "The upcoming affordable pick-up truck will have an aerodynamic efficiency that is 15 per cent better than any other pick-up truck on the market," Merkt confirmed, which is expected to improve range and energy consumption.

Future Prospects and Global Competition

If successful, Ford anticipates that this platform will enable a family of vehicles capable of competing on price with the best offerings worldwide, including those powered by internal combustion engines. Clarke expressed optimism about the progress, saying, "There’s still a lot of work to do, but we’re making progress, and we can’t wait to share more soon."

This announcement underscores Ford's strategic push into the affordable electric vehicle segment, potentially reshaping the UK and global automotive landscape with more accessible and efficient electric options for consumers.
