M6 lorry fire causes gridlock near Birmingham

Drivers are facing lengthy delays on the M6 northbound near Birmingham after a lorry caught fire this morning (October 6). Two lanes were closed at Junction 6, near Spaghetti Junction, following the blaze, causing gridlock traffic in the area.

Lorry recovered but road damage remains

The HGV has since been recovered, but motorists are still experiencing major delays because the road surface was damaged by the fire. West Midlands Roads posted on social media platform X: "M6 northbound after J6 Spaghetti Junction. Left lanes closed. Earlier lorry fire. The lorry has been recovered, but the road surface has been damaged. Expect delays from J5 Castle Bromwich and A38(M) out of city."

The latest traffic update from Inrix states: "Long delays due to earlier lorry fire on M6 northbound at J6 A38 Tyburn Road (Spaghetti Junction). Congestion to J5 (Castle Bromwich) and also back to J8 (the M5 Interchange) on the opposite side due to onlookers."

Congestion spreads to surrounding routes

Delays are being reported from Junction 5 Castle Bromwich and the A38(M) out of the city, with congestion also stretching back to Junction 8, the M5 Interchange, on the opposite carriageway due to onlookers slowing down to see the scene. The incident has caused significant disruption for commuters during the morning rush hour.

This is a breaking news story, and updates are being provided as the situation develops. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time or seek alternative routes while the road surface is assessed and repaired.
