Before you set off on a long drive, it is wise to check what is stored in your boot. According to Compare the Market, around four million vehicle breakdowns occur in the UK each year. To help drivers stay prepared, the experts have highlighted 17 essential items that should be kept in your car at all times.
Essential Items for Your Car Breakdown Kit
The recommended items include a portable mobile phone charger, an empty fuel can, water, snacks, warm clothes, a waterproof jacket, a puncture repair kit, a high visibility vest, a warning triangle, a torch, jump leads, a tow rope, a shovel, de-icer, a scraper, a first aid kit, and your breakdown insurance policy information.
Food and Drink
When it comes to refreshments, the experts advise always carrying a filled reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. Non-perishable food items such as cereal bars are ideal as they provide an energy boost and have a long shelf life. Avoid anything that could spoil or become mouldy when you need it most.
Keeping Warm
Warm clothing like jumpers is recommended, and a fleece or foil blanket can be particularly useful during the winter months. These items help maintain body temperature if you are stranded for an extended period.
Visibility and Safety
Although not a legal requirement in the UK, a high-visibility vest can be very useful, especially when breaking down in a dark or dangerous location. Being seen reduces the risk of accidents. Similarly, if your car breaks down, the Highway Code advises placing a warning triangle at least 45 metres (147 feet) behind your vehicle on non-motorway roads to alert other drivers. Warning triangles fold down small for easy storage. Rule 276 of the Highway Code states: 'Put a warning triangle on the road at least 45 metres (147 feet) behind your broken-down vehicle on the same side of the road, or use other permitted warning devices if you have them. Always take great care when placing or retrieving them, but never use them on motorways.'
Repair Kit
Flat tyres are a common cause of breakdowns. Since many modern cars no longer come with a spare tyre, a puncture repair kit is essential. These kits can seal punctures and reinflate the tyre as a temporary fix. However, do not use the repair kit if the puncture is larger than 4mm or if the wheel itself is damaged. Many vehicles come with a kit, or you can purchase one from automotive stores.
Highway Code Advice for Breakdowns
Rule 276 also advises: if your vehicle breaks down, think first of other road users. Get your vehicle off the road if possible, warn other traffic by using hazard warning lights, and help others see you by wearing light-coloured or fluorescent clothing in daylight and reflective clothing at night or in poor visibility. Keep your sidelights on if it is dark or visibility is poor, and do not stand between your vehicle and oncoming traffic. At night or in poor visibility, avoid standing where you might obstruct other drivers' view of your lights.
