New advanced roadside cameras equipped with artificial intelligence are being deployed in 12 locations across Scotland as part of a six-month trial aimed at catching drivers using mobile phones behind the wheel. The technology is designed to address the growing problem of phone use while driving, a major cause of road accidents.
How the Cameras Work
The smart cameras use AI to detect when a driver is holding or using a phone. If caught, offenders could receive six penalty points on their license and a fine. The trial will assess the effectiveness of the technology before any potential wider rollout across the UK.
Public Support for Stricter Enforcement
A survey by Quotezone.co.uk found that 81% of motorists support the use of more AI cameras to tackle phone use while driving. Greg Wilson, a motoring expert at Quotezone.co.uk, said: “Using a mobile phone while driving remains one of the most dangerous distractions on the road, yet research shows many drivers are still guilty of quick checks.” He added that with AI cameras being tested, enforcement is expected to become much stricter in the coming years.
Consequences of Phone Use While Driving
A single conviction for mobile phone use can lead to six penalty points, a fine, and higher insurance premiums. Wilson emphasized that prevention is key: “Staying focused behind the wheel protects lives, licences and long-term motoring costs.”
Future Implications
If the trial proves successful, the cameras could be installed more widely across the UK. Police are keen to use any tools that can make roads safer and reduce deaths and injuries. The trial reflects a broader effort to curb dangerous driving behaviors and improve road safety for all users.
