New 'intelligent' AI roadside cameras have been switched on in part of the UK, marking the latest effort to make motorists comply with safety rules on the roads. Police chiefs hope the technology will tackle the concerning surge in mobile phone use at the wheel.
AI Cameras Go Live in Scotland Trial
Using advanced technology, the AI cameras can detect people using phones while driving. They have been rolled out in 12 different locations in Scotland as part of a six-month trial. Depending on the results, the cameras could be installed across the UK more widely in future years, with police forces monitoring the outcomes closely.
A massive 90% of drivers admitted they had used their phones while driving during a recent survey, indicating how widespread the issue is. A new survey for Quotezone.co.uk found that 81% of motorists are keen to see more of these cameras used across the UK to tackle the problem.
Expert Warns of Stricter Enforcement
Greg Wilson, motoring expert at Quotezone.co.uk, said: “Using a mobile phone while driving remains one of the most dangerous distractions on the road, yet research shows many drivers are still guilty of quick checks. With AI cameras being tested to detect offenders, motorists should expect enforcement to become much stricter in the coming years.
“A single conviction for mobile phone use can lead to six penalty points, a fine, and higher insurance premiums. It’s encouraging to see that most people would challenge a driver using their phone, but prevention is key - staying focused behind the wheel protects lives, licences and long-term motoring costs.
“It’s important to realise just how dangerous it can be to get distracted, and help make mobile phone use a thing of the past for the safety of all road users.”
