Police rushed to cordon off part of Birmingham city centre this morning after an unattended bag was discovered at a bus stop. The incident occurred in Centenary Square, prompting a swift response from West Midlands Police.
Officers were called to the scene at 11:41 am on Friday, 8 May 2026, following reports of a suspicious bag left at a bus stop. As a precaution, authorities established a cordon around the area while they examined the bag's contents.
After a thorough inspection, the bag was determined to pose no threat, and the cordon was subsequently lifted. A spokesperson for West Midlands Police stated: "We were called to Centenary Square at 11.41 this morning after an unattended bag was found at a bus stop. Officers attended and a cordon was put in place as a precaution. After examining the contents of the bag, nothing suspicious was found and the cordon is now being lifted."
This incident follows a similar event in Tettenhall Wood, where a suspicious bag found on a bus led to a temporary road closure on School Road. The bag was discovered on the Number 1 bus service during a driver shift change at the bus stop outside Penk Rise. One resident reported being unable to access his property for half an hour during the incident. That road has since been reopened.
West Midlands Police have not released further details regarding the bag found in Centenary Square, but confirmed that there was no ongoing threat to public safety.
