Drivers May Lose Parking Under New Liverpool Cycle Route Plan
Drivers Face Parking Loss Over New Cycle Route Plan

Drivers risk being unable to park outside their homes under a new cycle lane plan approved by Liverpool City Council. The council has given the green light to an 8km 'active travel' route linking the city centre with Childwall.

Consultation Results

According to the council, 75 per cent of consultation respondents backed the plans, while 69 per cent said they would use the route if it went ahead. However, some residents are unhappy with the proposal.

Resident Concerns

Paul Jones, a resident living near the junction, told GB News: 'I'm five doors down from the junction, and we already get cars blocking my drive, and they're going to decrease parking spaces. It feels like they haven't done their due diligence. I think it will be more prone to accidents; it doesn't add to anything. It doesn't add up as a strategy.'

Tony Hollis, who has lived in the area for 15 years, said: 'I don't think they are going to work on reducing traffic, and there are other opportunities they could take. I'd like to think as residents we'd have more say on this rather than it being imposed on us.'

Support for the Scheme

Picton Cycles, a local bike shop, described the scheme as a 'great idea' that could help cut traffic and encourage more people to cycle. Roger Cawte added: 'I always wonder what would happen if people parked outside their homes at the edge of the cycle lane. It would be a problem but technically I think it would be as lawful as parking at the edge of the carriageway.'

Frances Hartley expressed frustration: 'The disruption to main roads, roundabouts is just awful. Only seen one person using one up to now. That along with new pipes, Internet, water, and all the others drive you to distraction.'

Council Position

Councillor Dan Barrington said: 'The proposed scheme aims to make our roads safer and easier to use for people walking, wheeling and cycling. Active travel brings real health benefits, and we want to give everyone more choice in how they move around the city.'
