The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an updated amber heat-health alert (HHA) for parts of England, in effect until 8pm on Tuesday. In response, the AA and RAC are urging drivers to pack seven essential items in their vehicles before the deadline.
Essential Items for Drivers
Lee Morley from the AA emphasized the importance of carrying water, recommending at least one litre per person. He also advised packing snacks, sun cream, medication, a first aid kit, mobile phone chargers, and using the AA app along with what3words for location sharing in case of breakdowns or delays.
The RAC's Jack Halstead echoed this, adding lightweight clothing to block the sun. He warned of a 10% surge in breakdowns due to overheating engines and tyre blowouts caused by expanding air in the heat. Halstead stressed the importance of essential maintenance, advising drivers not to ignore warning lights or skip servicing.
Health Precautions
Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, highlighted the serious health risks for older adults and those with underlying conditions. He urged health and social care services to prepare and reminded people to check on elderly relatives and neighbours. Simple steps like staying hydrated, avoiding the sun during peak hours, and keeping homes cool are key to staying safe during hot weather.
