Drivers in England are being urged to consider staying off the road from 4:45pm on Friday as an estimated 19 million people prepare to travel over the bank holiday weekend, according to RAC data.
Heaviest Traffic Days
Friday, May 22, and Saturday, May 23, are expected to see the most congestion, with 3.8 million journeys planned on each day. The RAC advised: "Drivers looking to spend less time in the car should consider making their getaway outside of peak hours."
M25 Bottleneck
On Friday, the M25 anticlockwise between junction 10 and junction 6 is likely to experience the worst delays, starting around 4:45pm.
RAC mobile servicing and repairs team leader Sean Kimberlin said: "With the weather looking like it may improve, millions are planning to make a getaway trip over the bank holiday weekend. Our research shows it is set to be the busiest late May bank holiday since 2024, proving that even with high fuel prices, drivers are eager to make the most of a long weekend."
Summer Readiness Tips
Kimberlin added: "As we emerge from unsettled, chilly weather, it is important to get your car summer ready. Checking oil and coolant is essential, along with ensuring tyres have plenty of tread, are in good condition, and are inflated to the correct pressures to improve fuel economy. Screenwash is also vital for a clear, bug-free view of the road."
He also advised: "Make sure you take enough drinking water for the journey, especially as you may spend longer on the road due to traffic jams. Having a phone, charging cable, and a portable battery pack readily available is crucial in case you break down."
