Drivers Urged to Turn Off AC in Cars During 38C UK Heatwave
Drivers Urged to Turn Off Car AC Amid 38C Heatwave

Drivers are being urged to avoid switching on air conditioning during the UK heatwave, with temperatures expected to hit 38C this week. Instead of cranking up the AC, motorists should roll down their windows to expel hot air, according to experts.

Expert Advice from ALA Insurance

Simon England, founder of GAP insurance provider ALA Insurance, explained a simple yet effective technique: “It sounds a bit odd, but it genuinely works better than you’d expect. Simply drop one rear window fully, then on the opposite side, open and close the front door 8 to 10 times without slamming it. It helps push the hot air out and draw cooler air in.”

England added: “Put the AC on high, aimed at your face or feet, and keep recirculate off so you’re not shifting warm air around. Drop all windows and drive to push heat out. After 2-3 minutes, roll the windows up and switch recirculate on and cool air will circulate as intended.”

RAC Tips for Hot Weather Driving

The RAC also provided guidance for drivers facing the scorching conditions. “Cover the seats with a blanket or jacket. If your vehicle has leather seats then the summer sun will transform the surface of the seat into a hotplate. Keep them cool by covering them up, especially if you have to park in direct sunlight,” the organization advised.

Drivers are also encouraged to learn how their car’s air conditioning system works. “Check the owner’s manual to fully understand how it operates and what setting(s) you need to use to cool the car’s interior quickly and effectively in the summer,” the RAC said.

Stay Hydrated and Prepared

The RAC emphasized the importance of hydration: “Carry water and soft drinks at all times. Keep a spare bottle of water and one or two soft drinks in your car at all times. Dehydration can impact your concentration and awareness levels, presenting a danger to drivers in hot weather conditions.”

Additionally, they recommended keeping a cool bag or box in the car to keep drinks and snacks cool during the heatwave, ensuring proper hydration and refreshment.

With the UK experiencing temperatures of 38C, these tips aim to help motorists stay safe and comfortable while driving.
