The DVLA has issued a warning to drivers about a clamping crackdown, with over 150,000 cars already affected in 2025. The agency urges road users to set up an online account to receive vehicle tax reminders by text or email, a task that takes just five minutes and can help avoid fines and clamping.
Clamping and Fines
Drivers who fail to tax their vehicles face a £1,000 fine. Under DVLA rules, untaxed vehicles parked on public roads can be clamped or seized. Even vehicles with a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) parked on public roads, or those without a SORN on private roads, are at risk.
What to Do If Your Vehicle Is Clamped
If your vehicle is clamped or removed, the DVLA advises calling the number on the INF32 leaflet left on your vehicle. You can also contact your local police by dialing 101 or call NSL to locate your vehicle. To release it, you must pay a release fee and provide proof of vehicle tax payment.
You may pay a surety (deposit) if you do not tax the vehicle before release. The deposit costs £160 for cars or motorcycles and up to £700 for other vehicles. The DVLA states: "You can pay online, over the phone, or in person at the car pound. You’ll pay less if you get your vehicle released within 24 hours of it being clamped or removed."
Consequences of Non-Payment
The DVLA warns: "Your vehicle may be disposed of or sold if you do not pay to get it released." To avoid these penalties, set up an online account today.
