FCDO Updates Travel Advice for USA, Mexico, and Canada Ahead of World Cup
FCDO Updates Travel Advice for USA, Mexico, Canada

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for three countries, including the United States, Mexico, and Canada, in anticipation of the FIFA World Cup. The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by these three North American nations, takes place from 11 June to 19 July.

The FCDO advises UK travellers planning to visit during this period to consult the dedicated World Cup page for detailed information. The guidance covers a range of topics, such as visa and entry requirements, travel insurance, match tickets, and stadium entry protocols.

Key Travel Information

Additional advice addresses accommodation, transport to and from events, fan zones, and public viewings. The FCDO also highlights laws and cultural differences that may vary by state. Travelers are reminded that they are subject to both state and federal laws while in a state.

"Not following all US state and federal laws can put your visa status and future travel to the US at risk," the FCDO warns. "You are expected to have a copy of your ESTA or visa and proof of identity with you at all times."

Safety and Legal Guidance

The updated advice includes information on drugs and illegal substances, as well as guidance for LGBT+ travellers. It also covers extreme weather and natural disasters, including hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, flooding, wildfires, and volcanic eruptions. The FCDO reminds travellers that support is available if they are hospitalised, arrested, or lose their passport.

World Cup Context

England and Scotland have both qualified for the World Cup, which kicks off in just a few weeks. The updates coincide with Scotland head coach Steve Clarke naming his World Cup squad, which includes Southampton striker Ross Stewart, who returns to the international team after a four-year absence.
