Drivers Warned Heatwave Could Cost £1,500+ in Car Repairs
Heatwave Car Repairs Could Cost Over £1,500

Drivers have been warned that the upcoming heatwave this weekend and early next week could cost them more than £1,500 in repairs. Temperatures are expected to reach 30C in the coming days, putting vehicles under severe strain.

RAC Reports Surge in Breakdowns

The RAC reports a 20% surge in vehicle failures during heatwaves, as engines, tyres and batteries struggle when temperatures exceed 30C. Keith Hawes, Director of Nationwide Vehicle Contracts, warns that with increased summer travel, long-distance journeys and heavier vehicle loads, the summer months are emerging as one of the most challenging times for vehicles.

Hawes said: “What makes summer particularly risky is that this strain often coincides with long-distance journeys and heavier vehicle loads, which can expose underlying issues that might otherwise go unnoticed. Simple preventative checks, such as ensuring tyres are correctly inflated, coolant levels are topped up, and the battery is in good condition, can significantly reduce the chance of breaking down during busy summer travel periods.”

Battery Strain

While winter is often blamed for battery issues, the RAC claims they are the main cause of summer breakdowns. This is due to more short journeys, stop-start traffic, and entertainment devices plugged in during long journeys. High temperatures can also cause battery fluid to evaporate and internal components to corrode, leading to sudden loss of power and breakdowns. A car battery replacement can cost up to £400 with fitting. Warning signs include lethargic car starting or lights appearing dimmer.

Overheating Engines and Cooling System Failures

High temperatures accelerate wear on engines and cooling systems, increasing the likelihood of overheating. According to AAA data, engine cooling system faults account for over 1 in 10 (11%) serious breakdowns that require towing. Heat also causes fluids to break down faster, reducing their ability to regulate temperature and protect engine components. Depending on which parts need replacing, cooling system repairs can cost up to £500. Warning signs include a dashboard temperature gauge spike and steam from under the bonnet.

Tyre Blowouts

Tyres are particularly vulnerable in hot weather as it can increase air pressure inside tyres, especially during long motorway journeys. Recent UK heatwaves have seen faulty tyres drive a 10% increase in breakdown callouts. The average cost per tyre is around £110, which can quickly add up if multiple tyres blow. Heat, combined with heavy loads and long-distance driving, can push tyres beyond their limits, significantly increasing the likelihood of dangerous blowouts. Warning signs include cracks or distortions in the rubber and low pressure.

Air Conditioning Failures

Air conditioning systems work harder in hot weather, increasing strain on compressors. Faulty air conditioning can signal wider problems within the vehicle’s cooling system, increasing the risk of overheating and further mechanical faults if left unchecked. For your air-con to run cold again, it will need regassing, which can cost up to £200. Warning signs include weak airflow and grinding or hissing noises when the AC is on.
