Popular airline KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has announced changes to its European flight schedule for May, citing rising kerosene costs that have made a limited number of routes financially unviable. The airline also extended cancellations to Dubai, Riyadh, and Dammam until June 14, 2026, amid ongoing uncertainties in the Middle East.
European Flight Reductions
KLM stated on its website that it will operate 80 fewer return flights to and from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, representing less than 1% of its European flights during the period. The airline emphasized that there is no kerosene shortage, but rising fuel prices have affected profitability on certain routes. Passengers affected by the changes will be rebooked onto the next available flight, with many destinations like London and Düsseldorf served multiple times daily, allowing for quick re-accommodation.
Middle East Conflict Impact
The adjustments come after the International Energy Agency (IEA) warned in mid-April that Europe has approximately six weeks' worth of jet fuel remaining, potentially leading to shortages and cancellations by early June. The crisis stems from conflicts in the Middle East blocking the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting vital fuel supplies. Derren Nathan, head of equity research at Hargreaves Lansdown, noted that Brent Crude prices have climbed 5% to over $95 per barrel, following a drop to $85 on hopes of resumed energy cargoes through the Strait.
Extended Cancellations to Middle East
KLM has extended cancellations for flights to and from Dubai until June 14, citing continued uncertainties in the region. Similarly, flights to Riyadh and Dammam are cancelled up to and including June 14. The airline stated: "To provide clarity and certainty to travellers scheduled to fly to these destinations in the coming weeks, the cancellations have been extended." KLM assured that passenger safety remains its top priority and that affected travellers will be notified personally, with options to change flights or request refunds via the KLM website.
KLM expects a busy May holiday period and is working to ensure passengers can travel as planned. The airline continues to monitor the situation closely and remains in contact with relevant authorities.
