New cameras are set to be installed at one of the busiest junctions in the West Midlands as part of a crackdown on a rule that many drivers find confusing. Motorists could soon face penalties for violations they may not even realize they are committing.
Enforcement will begin near Junction 1 of the M5 in West Bromwich, a section heavily congested during daily rush hour traffic. The initiative targets yellow box junctions, which are widely misunderstood according to research.
Understanding Yellow Box Rules
Yellow boxes must be kept clear at all times, except when waiting to turn right. Vehicles should not stop inside them under any other circumstances. These painted, hashed boxes are typically found in busy areas where traffic queues build up, such as roundabouts and traffic lights.
Purpose and Common Mistakes
The boxes are designed to keep traffic flowing in multiple directions, preventing queuing drivers from blocking other routes and causing congestion. Motorists should only enter a yellow box if they are confident they can exit it without stopping. However, many drivers misjudge this or are unaware of the rules, leading to cars becoming stranded inside the box due to lack of concentration or blindly following the vehicle ahead. This often results in horns honking as traffic gets blocked.
Enforcement Details
Sandwell Council has confirmed it is working towards enforcement on the A41 in West Bromwich, near the busy M5 junction, and will be installing cameras. The exact date when the cameras will become operational remains unclear at this stage.
