Met Office Names 7 UK Areas Set for Snow on Wednesday

The Met Office has released its latest weather maps, predicting that snow will return to parts of the United Kingdom this Wednesday, May 13. According to the forecast, seven areas across the UK, including regions in Scotland and northern England, are expected to experience a blanketing of snow beginning just after midnight and continuing for over 24 hours into Thursday morning.

Rain and Cooler Temperatures for Most of UK

While these areas brace for snow, the majority of the UK, including England and Wales, will see rain and significantly cooler temperatures, a stark contrast to the sunshine enjoyed over the past week. The weather is expected to clear up again heading into the weekend.

Met Office Forecast Details

The Met Office predicts that colder weather will set in on Tuesday, with heavy showers anticipated on Wednesday and Thursday, along with a risk of overnight frost. In its forecast for Tuesday, the Met Office stated: "Rain in the north gradually clears south through the day. Sunny spells following with scattered showers in the north and northwest. Feeling chilly, especially in the brisk northerly breeze."

For Wednesday to Friday, the forecast adds: "Blustery with sunny spells and heavy showers on both Wednesday and Thursday. More settled on Friday with drier and brighter conditions. Remaining chilly throughout with a risk of overnight frost."

Outlook for Rest of May

Looking further ahead, the Met Office expects unsettled conditions with rain to dominate through the middle of May. The forecast notes: "Changeable and at times rather unsettled conditions look to dominate through the middle part of May, with low pressure often close by. This means periods of rain or showers, some of which could be heavy, for many places, though some drier interludes are also expected. For the most part, temperatures are likely to be close to or perhaps a little below normal, with winds often blowing from a northwesterly quadrant."

By the end of this period, pressure may increase towards the southwest, which could bring more dry weather in that region.

Seven Areas Most Likely to See Snow

The seven areas in the UK most likely to see snow on Wednesday, according to the Met Office, are: Alston (Pennines, England); Biggar (Scotland); Loch Rannoch (Scotland); Fort William (Scotland); Craig (Scotland); Dalwhinnie (Scotland); and Ullapool (Scotland).
