School closed after massive fire at former college

Pupils were told to stay at home today after a fire broke out near a Midland school. Dozens of firefighters were deployed after a blaze engulfed the former Hunters Hill College at Blackwell, near Bromsgrove in Worcestershire, at around 9.25pm yesterday, Monday, June 1.

The fire sent plumes of thick black smoke into the air which could be seen for miles around. The fire was brought under control and crews were at the scene damping down this morning. However, Blackwell First School on St. Catherines Road was closed due to poor air quality.

Fire at former college

Hunters Hill College was maintained by Birmingham City Council but closed permanently in 2021. The Healing Horse sanctuary said on Facebook: "We are receiving concerned messages about the horrendous fire at the old disused Hunters Hill college in Bromsgrove which isn’t far from us. Just to let you know we are here and we are all OK. Lots of fire engines have raced past us and the fire looks awful. Our horses and ponies are happily munching in their fields, the chickens are fine and the cats are asking us to feed them! We pray the fire is put out soon and the fire fighters are safe and all the wildlife and trees are safe too. Thank you so much for all your love and support. Susie and Rianne."
