A driver was taken to hospital with non-serious injuries after a crash on the M5 northbound in Worcestershire, leading to the closure of the carriageway between junctions 7 and 6 and causing delays of up to 75 minutes.
Two separate incidents close M5 northbound
Police closed the M5 northbound between junctions 7 and 6 following two separate incidents on Wednesday, August 19. The crash occurred just before 3pm, with one man involved in the collision taken to hospital for checks.
West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed the incident in a statement. A spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a two vehicle RTC on the northbound carriageway of the M5 between junctions 7 and 6, Warndon at 2.48pm today. One ambulance attended the scene and treated the driver of one vehicle, a man, who had sustained non-serious injuries. He was conveyed to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for further checks."
Delays exceed 75 minutes with 7 miles of congestion
National Highways West Midlands first reported the crash at 3.34pm on social media platform X, stating: "M5 northbound J7-J6 traffic held due to a traffic collision. - Emergency services are on scene. @WMerciaPolice - Delays in excess of 45 minutes with 5 miles of congestion."
In an update at 4pm, they added: "Update 1 - M5 northbound J7-J6 traffic remains held due to a traffic collision. - @WMerciaPolice remain on scene. - Vehicle recovery in progress and clean up works. - Delays in excess of 70 minutes with 6 miles of congestion."
At 4.21pm, a National Highways spokesperson confirmed the road had reopened, stating: "Update 2 - M5 northbound J7-J6 - Northbound carriageway has reopened following 2 separate incidents which have concluded. Delays in excess of 75 minutes with 7 miles of congestion."
Police response and ongoing impact
West Mercia Police also responded to the incident. A spokesperson for the force said: "Officers are responding to a multiple vehicle collision between junction 7 and 6 on the northbound carriageway, which is currently blocked. We’ll share more information when we are able to."
Despite the reopening of the carriageway, motorists continued to face significant delays, with congestion stretching for 7 miles and journey times extended by approximately 75 minutes.
