Tesco has announced a significant reduction in fuel prices across all 500 of its filling stations in the United Kingdom. The supermarket giant is cutting 5p off a litre of diesel and 2p off a litre of unleaded petrol, affecting millions of drivers. This move comes as tensions between the US and Iran show signs of easing, potentially ending the conflict in the Gulf region.
How to Find Your Nearest Tesco Petrol Station
To locate your nearest Tesco Petrol Filling Station, customers are advised to use the store locator on Tesco's website. It is important to note that under Tesco's rules, only authorised plastic or metal containers are permitted for fuel storage. Plastic containers have a maximum capacity of 10 litres, while metal containers can hold up to 20 litres.
Safety Guidelines for Petrol Containers
Petrol containers must be clearly marked or labelled with the words "PETROL" and "HIGHLY FLAMMABLE", along with a hazard warning sign and the capacity in litres. Additionally, the manufacturer's name and the date of manufacture should be displayed. Customers are allowed to fill a maximum of two containers of petrol.
Legal Storage Limits
The maximum amount of petrol that can be legally stored by a private individual without formally notifying the Petroleum Enforcement Authority is 30 litres. Tesco emphasises that, like other major petrol retailers in the UK, they do not have a single national price for fuel. Instead, they strive to remain competitive in all areas, including the services and products available at their kiosks and forecourts.
A Tesco spokesperson explained: "Since fuel prices often change, we're unable to list them here. Please visit your local Tesco Petrol Filling Station to find out the latest prices."
Fuel Price Trends
According to the AA motoring group, the price of a litre of petrol has decreased by 4.6p, dropping from 159.7p on 28 May to 155.1p this week. Diesel has seen a more substantial drop of 9.3p, falling from 184.4p to 175.1p per litre over the same period. The AA credits the government's price comparison scheme, launched in February, for these reductions.
Luke Bosdet of the AA commented: "We have been surprised at the speed of the reductions and concluded that this is the influence of Fuel Finder: retailers seeing how much rivals are cutting their prices and, knowing that drivers can see the same information, having to respond."
This development is expected to provide relief for motorists across the country, as fuel costs continue to decline.
