The Met Office has issued a warning to dog owners across the UK as temperatures are set to soar this Sunday, with some areas expected to be hotter than Barbados. Pet owners are strongly advised to avoid walking their dogs during the hottest part of the day, between 11am and 3pm, when UV rays are strongest.
Heatwave Forecast for Bank Holiday Weekend
Deputy Chief Forecaster Steve Kocher said: "The Bank Holiday weekend will see an exceptional spell of warmth for May with a notable heatwave forecast. Temperatures will climb through the weekend, especially in the south, where 30°C is likely on Saturday and 32°C on Sunday." He added that Monday could see 33°C in southern England and the Midlands, potentially breaking the UK May temperature record of 32.8°C set in 1922.
Health Advice for Pets and People
Dog walkers are urged to stick to early morning or late evening walks. The heatwave also poses risks to vulnerable people, including the elderly, those with underlying conditions, and those living alone. Tips include staying cool indoors by closing curtains in sun-facing rooms, drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding excess alcohol, and never leaving anyone in a closed, parked vehicle.
Cancer Research UK urged sun safety, as melanoma cases reached a record high of 20,980 in 2022, with projections of 26,500 new cases per year by 2040.
