All UK petrol and diesel drivers have been advised to remove three items from their cars today, as fuel prices continue to rise following the latest Middle East conflict. The warning comes from motoring expert Damon Jowett, Director of Customer, Roadside & Network Services at Green Flag, who says that removing unnecessary weight and drag can help save fuel.
Three Items to Remove
Jowett told Express.co.uk that clearing out clutter from the boot and footwells can reduce weight and support more efficient driving. However, he stressed that three items in particular have a much more powerful impact on consumption: roof boxes, bike racks, and carriers. These should be removed when not in use, as they increase drag and fuel use at higher speeds.
Why Roof Boxes and Bike Racks Increase Fuel Consumption
Roof boxes and bike racks add to the overall weight of the vehicle and affect its aerodynamics. This leads to increased drag, forcing the engine to work harder to maintain normal speed. According to the Energy Saving Trust, a roof box can add up to 39% more drag at 75 mph.
Fuel Price Context
Fuel prices have levelled out in recent weeks but remain significantly higher than costs in February. Petrol prices are up 23.9p per litre since the Middle East conflict began, while diesel prices have risen by 45.4p per litre. The RAC has warned that petrol prices are likely to rise further, currently averaging 157.6p per litre, their highest level since April 20.
Martin Lewis's Advice
Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has also emphasised the importance of removing roof racks. He said: "First of all, it's got a roof rack on. If that's empty, get rid of it. Really inefficient. You're having to push that through the wind on a motorway as you drive."
Drivers are urged to take action now to reduce fuel consumption and save money at the pumps.
