UK Tourists Face New €2 Daily Tax in Vigo, Spain

UK tourists visiting the Spanish holiday hotspot of Vigo will soon face a new tourist tax, with charges reaching up to €2 per person per day. The city, known for its 45 beaches and popularity among British holidaymakers, follows Santiago and La Coruña in implementing the levy.

Tax Details and Exemptions

According to El Debate, no type of accommodation will be exempt from the charge. The tax varies by accommodation type: €2 daily for 4-star superior and 5-star hotels, €1.60 for tourist accommodation and 2-star superior, 3-star, and 4-star hotels, €1.20 for guesthouses and 1- and 2-star hotels, and €0.80 for holiday apartments, rural tourism properties, hostels, and campsites. Cruise passengers are also included.

Phased Implementation

Mayor Abel Caballero announced that the tax will be rolled out gradually from October 2026. Until July 1, 2027, it applies only to the first two nights of a stay. After that date, it covers up to five nights per stay. He stated, 'From when it comes into force until July 1, 2027, the tax will apply to the first two nights of a stay. Therefore, someone visiting Vigo for 4 nights will pay the tourist tax for only the first 2 nights. From July 1, 2027, the tax will apply to a maximum of five nights per stay.'

Background and Visitor Information

Santiago and La Coruña introduced similar levies in late 2025. Vigo, the largest city in Galicia, is a popular destination for its maritime history, architecture, cuisine, and festivals. Brittany Ferries describes it as 'a fascinating port city with a vibrant maritime history, elegant architecture and incredible cuisine among many other delights.'

UK tourists should also note that a new 'arrival card' requirement has been announced by the Foreign Office for entering Spain. The tourist tax in Vigo adds to the costs for visitors, but the city remains a top choice for its diverse attractions.
