The UK Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for Kosovo, warning UK tourists of 'heightened tensions' and urging them to 'be vigilant' amid sporadic unrest in the region. The announcement was made on Wednesday, June 10, with a tweak to the Kosovo travel guidance.
Changes to Travel Advice
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) confirmed that it no longer advises against all but essential travel to the municipalities of Zvečan, Zubin Potok, and Leposavic, as well as areas of Mitrovica north of the river Ibar. This change follows new information about northern Kosovo.
Recurring Tensions
The FCDO stated: 'Whilst there have been recurring tensions across northern Kosovo resulting in sporadic unrest, protests and security incidents, this has improved since 2024. However, northern Kosovo remains politically sensitive and conditions can change quickly.'
Localised incidents, including protests and disruptions, can occur with little warning, particularly during periods of heightened political tension. Tourists are advised to remain vigilant, monitor local media, and stay away from demonstrations and large gatherings.
Tourist Perspective
While Kosovo may not be a primary destination for UK tourists, Lonely Planet describes Europe's newest country as 'a fascinating land at the heart of the Balkans rewarding visitors with welcoming smiles, charming mountain towns, incredible hiking opportunities and 13th-century domed Serbian monasteries brushed in medieval art – and that's just for starters.'
Pristina, the capital, is noted as 'a fast-changing city that feels full of optimism and potential, even if its traffic-clogged streets and mismatched architectural styles don't make it an obviously attractive place.' The site adds that while the city has a couple of worthwhile museums and galleries, and serves as a base for interesting nearby sights, for most visitors, the atmosphere is as much an attraction as any classic tourist sight.
Safety Reminder
The FCDO emphasises that no travel can be guaranteed safe. Tourists are advised to research destinations and obtain appropriate travel insurance that covers their itinerary, planned activities, and emergency expenses. The FCDO provides advice about travel risks to help travellers make informed decisions.
