West Midlands Metro services are back up and running after a track fault in Sandwell caused significant disruption for morning commuters. The issue, which occurred on the line between Wednesbury and West Bromwich, was first reported shortly after 8am, with engineers swiftly dispatched to the scene.
Disruption Details and Resolution
Passengers experienced delays of up to 20 minutes as a result of the fault, which affected trams operating on the Wolverhampton to Birmingham route. The problem was identified as a points failure near the Sandwell and Dudley area, requiring manual intervention to rectify. By 10:15am, the fault had been resolved, and services resumed their normal schedules.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Metro said: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused to passengers this morning. Our teams worked quickly to fix the issue, and services are now running as normal."
Impact on Commuters
The disruption came during the peak morning rush hour, affecting hundreds of passengers traveling to work or school. Replacement bus services were not required, as the fault was resolved within two hours. However, some passengers reported longer waiting times at affected stops, including West Bromwich Central and Wednesbury Parkway.
Regular commuter Sarah Jenkins, 34, said: "I was running late for work because the tram was delayed. It's frustrating, but at least it was sorted quickly."
Background on Metro Reliability
This incident follows a series of minor disruptions on the West Midlands Metro network over the past year. The system, which carries millions of passengers annually, has faced occasional technical issues, but operators have consistently emphasised their commitment to maintaining reliable services. The network is currently undergoing expansion, with new lines to Digbeth and Dudley expected to open in the coming years.
