A fire on board a train at Birmingham New Street station caused major passenger disruption this morning, Friday, July 10. The travel hub confirmed that a fault on a city train triggered the incident, prompting a full evacuation of the station as a precaution.
Evacuation and Response
New Street station posted on X: "Due to an onboard train fault, services to and from Birmingham New Street are temporarily suspended. The station has been evacuated as a precaution whilst the fire services isolate the fault. We hope to get services moving again shortly. Thank you for your patience."
West Midlands Fire Service attended the scene to isolate the fault. The station later reopened, but passengers faced ongoing delays and cancellations.
Impact on Services
National Rail stated: "As service recovers, services running through this station may still be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised." The incident was resolved and lines reopened, but residual disruption continued through rush hour.
Passenger Samantha, travelling to London Euston, said her train was delayed by 30 minutes. She told BirminghamLive: "I was here just after the fire and there was just loads of confusion, I think, when everyone was let back in. I just hope my train doesn’t get delayed any more because I’ve got a meeting at midday."
An anonymous father waiting for his family said: "I was here and then all of a sudden everyone was told to leave. I rang my wife straight away to check on her and the kids. They’re fine but they’re delayed now."
