Major repairs to Wolverhampton Road are set to disrupt Metro services for more than a week, causing significant delays and diversions for commuters. The works, which begin on Monday, 20 March, will affect the West Midlands Metro line between Wolverhampton and Birmingham.
Details of the Disruption
The repairs, undertaken by Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) and the Metro operator, will require the closure of a section of the road for essential maintenance. This will result in the suspension of tram services between Wolverhampton St George's and Priestfield stops. Replacement bus services will be in operation to cover the affected route, but passengers are advised to allow extra travel time.
The disruption is expected to last until at least 28 March, impacting thousands of daily users. The works are part of a broader programme to upgrade the tram network and improve reliability.
Impact on Commuters
Regular commuters face significant inconvenience, with journey times potentially doubling. Local businesses may also see a drop in footfall as access is restricted. The disruption comes at a time when the region is already dealing with other transport challenges.
According to a TfWM spokesperson, “We apologise for the inconvenience these essential repairs will cause. They are necessary to ensure the safety and long-term reliability of the Metro network. We are working to minimise disruption and keep passengers informed.”
Alternative Travel Options
Passengers are encouraged to use alternative routes, including bus services and trains from Wolverhampton to Birmingham. The replacement bus service will run between Wolverhampton St George's and Priestfield, with connections to other tram services. Cyclists and pedestrians may also face diversions.
The road repairs are part of a wider investment in the region's transport infrastructure, aimed at reducing future breakdowns and delays.
