Essential Works Force Temporary Closure of Key Hospital Access Route
A major road leading to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham's Emergency Department (A&E) will be temporarily closed this weekend for essential works, with clearly signposted diversions implemented to guide traffic. The closure affects a section of Mindelsohn Way on the hospital campus, scheduled from 8pm on Friday, April 17, 2026, until 8pm on Sunday, April 19, 2026.
Impact on Vehicle Access and Nearby Facilities
During this period, there will be no through route to A&E via Mindelsohn Way for vehicles approaching from Vincent Drive. Additionally, access along this stretch to Birmingham Women’s Hospital and Harborne Hospital will be unavailable. Hospital officials urge drivers and visitors to plan ahead to minimise delays and disruptions.
A spokesperson for the hospital stated, "A part of Mindelsohn Way on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital site will be closed for essential works this weekend. This will mean no through route to the Emergency Department (A&E) via Mindelsohn Way (if approaching off Vincent Drive), or access via this route to Birmingham Women’s Hospital, or the HCA Healthcare, Harborne Hospital."
Diversions and Alternative Access Points
To facilitate continued access, diversions will be in place throughout the weekend, with signs directing traffic to alternative routes. The hospital emphasised that visitors and staff can still access Car Park D, and appointments in the Heritage Building, Cancer Centre, and Clinical Centre for Haematology will proceed as scheduled. Pedestrian access will remain unaffected.
The works will commence on Friday evening with the installation of diversion signs, followed by excavation activities over the weekend. By 8pm on Sunday, the road is expected to reopen with one lane operational, managed by temporary traffic lights.
Minimising Disruption and Ensuring Safety
Hospital authorities acknowledge the potential inconvenience caused by the roadworks and are committed to completing the tasks swiftly and safely. The spokesperson added, "We understand that roadworks can be disruptive and we are doing everything possible to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding."
Residents and hospital users are advised to follow on-site signage to avoid delays and ensure smooth travel during this temporary closure.
