Major Traffic Disruption After Sinkhole Halts Road Works
A major Birmingham road will remain closed until at least next Monday after a significant sinkhole was discovered during scheduled resurfacing work. The unexpected cavity appeared on Springfield Road in Kings Heath, specifically between Melton Road and Institute Road, on Wednesday, November 26.
Immediate Closure and Community Frustration
The discovery prompted an immediate closure of the street, which swiftly led to severe traffic congestion throughout the surrounding area. The gridlock was so disruptive that local residents reportedly left their homes to help direct traffic in an attempt to manage the chaos.
Frustration mounted on social media, with one resident, Sarah Bagshaw, advising others to 'Avoid anywhere on Springfield rd side. Constant chaos everywhere.' Another local, Jules Grace, mentioned that workers on the scene had advised about the sinkhole, warning people not to move the safety barriers. Kellyjo Yates called the situation 'ridiculous,' criticising the number of road closures exacerbating the gridlock.
Official Response and Repair Timeline
Councillor Izzy Knowles has confirmed that the road will stay closed until after the weekend to allow for comprehensive repairs. Barriers and official diversion routes have been established to manage traffic flow.
Councillor Knowles stated: 'Springfield Road will be closed to traffic again tonight due to a sinkhole having been found during resurfacing. Work to repair it is expected to take place tomorrow with resurfacing work to be completed by Monday.' This timeline provides some clarity for frustrated motorists and residents, though significant disruption is expected to continue for several days.
