Motorists across the UK are facing a growing financial crisis as unexpected car repair bills leave many struggling to make ends meet. New research reveals that the average cost of a surprise vehicle fix has climbed to a staggering £650, creating significant stress for drivers.
The rising cost of car ownership
A third of all motorists have been forced to pay for unexpected car repairs during the past 12 months, according to the latest RAC Report on Motoring. This represents a concerning increase from the previous year's figure of 59 percent, indicating a worsening situation for vehicle owners.
The data reveals that approximately 75 percent of drivers admit they would find it difficult to cover the cost of an unexpected repair bill. The financial strain is particularly acute for younger motorists, with 57 percent of those under 25 stating they would struggle to afford even a £500 garage bill.
Financial strain hits households
Perhaps most alarmingly, the research shows that almost four in 10 drivers would struggle to pay a bill of up to £500. The situation becomes even more dire for larger amounts, with more than half of respondents saying they would find it challenging to cover costs between £500 and £1,000.
The average repair bill now stands at £650, representing a £33 increase compared to the previous year. This rising cost comes at a time when many households are already feeling the pinch from broader economic pressures.
Expert advice for managing repair costs
Nick Mullender, RAC mobile servicing and repairs team leader, commented on the findings, stating it was "little wonder" that people were finding it difficult to meet unexpected repair costs. He emphasised the importance of regular vehicle maintenance to prevent more expensive issues down the line.
"Looking after a car by having it serviced at the correct intervals and getting repairs carried out in good time generally works out far cheaper than having to get a more major repair carried out in a hurry," Mullender explained.
He also highlighted the additional challenges drivers face, including difficulty securing garage appointments and the prospect of being without a vehicle for extended periods. The RAC recommends their mobile mechanics service as a convenient and affordable alternative for routine servicing and repairs.
The research for the RAC Report on Motoring was conducted between 4-21 April 2025 and surveyed 2,395 drivers across the UK.
