A483 road closes for safety checks after crash concerns

The A483 in Shropshire, a road considered among the most dangerous in the Midlands, is set to close for safety checks following years of calls for action. The surveys aim to improve safety along the stretch from Llanymynech to Oswestry, particularly at the Llynclys Crossroads, which has been labeled an accident blackspot.

Frequent Crashes Prompt Action

Local MP Helen Morgan has reported crashes on an almost weekly basis at the junction, which is used daily by families and schoolchildren. The work is desperately needed to help save lives, she said.

Survey Work and Closures

Surveys will be carried out with the A483 between Llynclys and Llanymynech fully closed from 9pm to 6am on weeknights until June 12. Morgan stated that the surveys will be used in the design of future improvements.

National Highways has already implemented some measures to improve safety at the junction, and its preferred option is to add a roundabout.

MP Welcomes Progress

Helen Morgan, MP for North Shropshire, said: “These survey works are an important step forward. People have been waiting far too long to see real progress at this dangerous junction, so it’s welcome news that work is now moving forward on a long-term solution.

“For years not only have I heard from residents, parents and local businesses about the fear and frustration caused by this junction, I’ve seen near misses first-hand. Far too many people have witnessed or been involved in serious collisions there, and that’s why this progress is so important.”

She added: “Local people have made it crystal clear that sticking-plaster fixes are not enough. We need a junction that is fundamentally safer, and a roundabout remains the best option. I know these overnight closures will cause inconvenience, but it is a price worth paying if it helps to deliver lasting safety improvements.”
