A one-mile stretch of the Black Country New Road between Moxley Junction and Patent Shaft Roundabout has emerged as one of the West Midlands' worst speeding hotspots, with thousands of drivers caught by average speed cameras each year.
Offence Numbers Revealed
New figures from a freedom of information request to West Midlands Police show that this year alone, 2,024 speeding offences were recorded southbound and 1,696 northbound on the busy route between Bilston and Wednesbury. The road is used daily by thousands commuting to work, shopping, or taking children to school.
Comparison with Other Hotspots
Birmingham's worst speeding hotspot is Bank Middleway/Belgrave Middleway, with 6,939 offences recorded this year. Of these, 5,670 drivers were caught heading towards Haden Circus Roundabout, and another 1,269 were caught going towards Fiveways Island. The A4540 New John Street West also features as a major problem area, with 6,679 speeding offences recorded.
Effectiveness of Average Speed Cameras
The data serves as a warning to drivers who doubt whether average speed cameras are working, as they are proving highly effective at catching rule-breakers on these stretches. According to the police figures, the cameras have been instrumental in identifying and penalising speeding drivers across the West Midlands.
