England is preparing for a significant shift in weather as a 400-mile 'rain bomb' is forecast to arrive on June 1, bringing heavy downpours and strong winds across large parts of the country. This follows a period of sunny weather and an expected bank holiday heatwave, with temperatures potentially reaching 33°C.
Weather Maps Predict Heavy Rain
According to new weather maps from WXCHARTS, which uses MetDesk data, the current summery conditions are set to end on June 1. The maps indicate that England could experience up to 5mm of rain per hour, with showers stretching from Cornwall to Newcastle. Some of these showers may be torrential, covering a distance of 400 miles.
Coastal Areas Most Affected
The worst-affected locations are expected to be coastal areas, including towns near Plymouth, Southampton, and Hastings. The Atlantic storm is predicted to sweep into the country from around midnight on June 1, moving eastwards until about 6pm on June 2. Heavy winds are also expected across much of England and Wales.
Contrast to Typical May Weather
May is traditionally one of the driest months in the UK, averaging about 50mm to 58mm of rain over approximately 15 days. This upcoming storm marks a notable departure from the norm.
Met Office Forecast for Late May to Early June
The Met Office forecast for May 26 to June 4 states: "Temperatures will fall through this period to be above normal but not as hot as through the preceding Bank Holiday weekend. With high pressure expected to remain in place for much of the UK, fine weather is likely to continue for most places. Some patchy rain may affect the far north at times and perhaps a few showers in the far south."
Forecasters also note that the week will not be entirely dry, with rain and thunderstorms still possible, especially as low-pressure systems remain close to the UK.
Expert Commentary
Met Office deputy chief forecaster Tony Wisson commented: "The weather later this week will feel like a marked contrast from recent days, with warm, fine and settled weather for many. While the warmth will persist through the Bank Holiday weekend, conditions will turn more unsettled later Friday and into Saturday, with a mix of cloud, showers and longer spells of rain. There is also the chance of thundery rain in places. Nonetheless, temperatures should remain warm or very warm through Saturday and into Sunday, with highs around 26°C in the south across the weekend and into next week."
