The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for Malta following an explosion at a fireworks manufacturing facility in the Magħtab/Mosta area. UK tourists planning holidays to the Mediterranean island are being urged to exercise caution.
Explosion Details and Official Response
On its 'Warnings and insurance' page, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) stated: "There has been an explosion at a fireworks manufacturing facility in the Magħtab/Mosta area this morning. We remain in contact with the Maltese authorities." The update further advised: "Stay away from the immediate Magħtab/Mosta area while emergency services remain on scene and follow the advice of the local authorities."
Impact on UK Tourists
Malta is a popular destination for UK holidaymakers, with direct flights from Birmingham and other UK airports. The island is known for its beaches, historic towns, and vibrant culture. TUI describes Malta as "a real up-and-comer on the clubbing scene" with a calendar full of carnivals, festivals, and parties.
Popular destinations include the UNESCO-listed capital Valletta, where visitors can explore the 16th-century St John’s Cathedral and Casa Rocca Piccola. Mellieha Bay offers sandy beaches, while resorts like Qawra and Bugibba provide flat rocks and platforms for sunbathing. Sliema, a former fishing village on the east coast, is now known for its stylish restaurants and wine bars. In St Julian’s, tourists can find an upmarket town with a variety of bars and clubs.
Safety Advice
The FCDO reminds travellers: "If you choose to travel, research your destinations and get appropriate travel insurance. Insurance should cover your itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency." The warning was issued on Monday, June 1, and the FCDO emphasised that its advice aims to help UK nationals make informed decisions about travel risks.
