Drivers filling up at Asda and Sainsbury's are being urged to shop elsewhere if they want the cheapest petrol, according to a new warning from the RAC. The motoring organization has revealed that Tesco is now the cheapest supermarket for petrol, with an average price of 154.4p per litre.
Tesco Leads as Cheapest Supermarket for Petrol
The RAC's data shows that Tesco, which has branches in Birmingham, offers petrol at an average of 154.4p per litre. This makes it the most affordable option among major supermarkets. Asda comes in second at 154.9p per litre, followed by Sainsbury's at 155.1p per litre. Morrisons has been identified as the priciest, with petrol averaging 155.8p per litre.
Diesel Prices Also Vary
For diesel, the cheapest supermarket is also Tesco, with an average price of 185.6p per litre. However, Morrisons charges 182.4p per litre for diesel, making it cheaper than Tesco in this category. Asda and Sainsbury's diesel prices are not specified in the RAC data.
RAC Advises Drivers to Shop Around
RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: "We strongly recommend drivers shop around for fuel and make use of free tools such as the myRAC app to never pay a penny more for fuel than they need to." He added that petrol prices can vary significantly even over short distances.
Rising Prices Linked to Geopolitical Tensions
The rising fuel prices come as the Strait of Hormuz remains closed due to ongoing tensions between the US and Iran. US President Donald Trump has threatened new attacks if Tehran does not agree to concessions. Trump stated he was "an hour away" from launching a fresh wave of strikes, which would have broken the existing ceasefire. He warned that a new US attack could come within days if a deal is not reached.
