Drivers in England and Wales face stricter drink-drive regulations under a new Government road safety strategy, with the legal alcohol limit set to be reduced. The proposed change means that even a single alcoholic beverage could push motorists over the threshold, leading to more penalties such as points on licenses or driving bans.
New Alcohol Limit Details
The Government intends to cut the current limit of 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath down to 22 micrograms. This adjustment aligns with recommendations from safety experts aiming to reduce road casualties. As a result, drivers will reach the legal limit much faster than before, prompting authorities to advise against any alcohol consumption before driving.
Impact on Motorists
Experts highlight that individual factors like age, weight, and metabolism affect how alcohol is processed, making it impossible to guarantee staying under the limit after a specific amount. In many cases, a pint of beer or a standard glass of wine could be enough to exceed the new threshold. The police urge drivers to avoid alcohol entirely if they plan to drive.
Additional Road Safety Measures
The strategy includes other tough changes, such as mandatory eyesight tests for drivers over 70 and the introduction of penalty points for seatbelt offences. These measures are part of a broader effort to cut road deaths and injuries. Recent reports indicate that repeat drug-driving incidents are five times more common than repeat drink-driving, highlighting the need for comprehensive enforcement.
Motorists are encouraged to stay informed and adapt to the upcoming rules to avoid legal consequences and ensure road safety for all.
