Christmas Traffic Warning: Avoid Friday 19 Dec for UK Festive Drives
Worst day for Christmas travel revealed as traffic hits record highs

As millions across the UK prepare to visit loved ones for the holidays, motoring experts have issued a stark warning about the busiest days on the roads, with one date in particular set to bring gridlock.

Record-Breaking Festive Traffic Predicted

New analysis of travel patterns indicates that the festive getaway could be one of the most congested on record. Data from the RAC shows that around 29.3 million car journeys were made in the lead-up to Christmas last year. With more cars than ever on UK roads, that number is expected to climb even higher this December.

Historically, traffic volumes reach their absolute peak on the Friday immediately before Christmas Day. This year, that falls on Friday 19th December, which is being flagged as the single worst day to attempt a long-distance trip.

Expert Advice to Beat the Christmas Jams

Specialists at Nationwide Vehicle Contracts are urging drivers to plan ahead to ensure a safer, less stressful journey. Their director, Keith Hawes, emphasised that a little preparation can make a significant difference during this hectic period.

The firm recommends five key steps for all motorists embarking on a festive trip:

1. Rethink Your Travel Day and Time

If your schedule allows, consider travelling on Thursday 18th, Saturday 20th, or even Christmas Eve to avoid the worst of the congestion. If you must drive on Friday the 19th, aim to set off very early in the morning or later in the evening, steering clear of the peak hours which typically run from 9am until 4pm.

Using live traffic applications like Google Maps or Waze is crucial for monitoring delays and rerouting around known hotspots, such as the M25, the M5/M6 corridor, and the M1. Always build extra time into your journey plan to avoid the temptation to rush.

2. Prepare Your Car for Winter Conditions

Before any long drive, conduct essential winter checks. Ensure your tyre tread is sufficient, top up antifreeze, and verify all lights and wipers are functioning correctly. Pack a winter kit including de-icer, an ice scraper, blankets, and a torch.

Drivers of leased vehicles should note that many modern leases come with winter-ready features like heated seats and advanced traction control, which are ideal for handling icy roads.

3. Pack Securely and Drive Smoothly

With cars often overloaded with gifts and luggage, it is vital to pack smartly. Keep your rear window clear and avoid stacking items above seat height; failure to do so can result in a fine of up to £1,000 and three penalty points. Secure all loose items in the boot to prevent them from becoming dangerous in a sudden stop.

Once on the road, maintain calm. Heavy traffic and poor weather require patience. Adhere to speed limits, keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, and avoid abrupt braking on wet or icy surfaces.

4. Utilise Your Lease Benefits

If you are driving a leased car, familiarise yourself with the included benefits. Most contracts offer comprehensive roadside assistance that covers breakdowns, flat batteries, and emergency towing. This service provides invaluable peace of mind when facing long delays and crowded routes.

"Christmas is one of the busiest times on the roads, and planning ahead can make all the difference," stated Keith Hawes. "Simple steps like checking your car before you travel and using live traffic apps can help you avoid unnecessary stress and stay safe. If you’re driving a leased vehicle, don’t forget the added benefits like roadside assistance, they’re there to give you peace of mind during the festive rush."
