The Mayor of the West Midlands has declared that the former MG Rover site in Longbridge is 'being brought back to life' as a major redevelopment project reaches a pivotal stage. Approximately 20 years after assembly lines abruptly ceased at the car plant, one of Europe's largest at its peak, the site is now set to become an employment hub.
Background of the site
In 2005, thousands of workers lost their jobs when MG Rover entered administration, leaving the local community in shock. The sprawling factory in south Birmingham had been a cornerstone of the region's industrial heritage.
Now, proposals to transform the derelict land into Indurent Park Longbridge have been approved by the council's planning committee. The development includes 13 industrial and logistics units plus ancillary office space, designed to create a vibrant employment centre.
Investment and job creation
Developer Indurent confirmed this month that the final construction phase has begun, marking what they describe as a 'major milestone' in the area's regeneration. The company has invested £30 million into the project, which is expected to deliver 590 full-time jobs upon completion, along with 280 construction roles and local training opportunities.
Mayor Richard Parker welcomed the progress, stating: 'This development is another milestone in the regeneration of this once iconic site and will continue its proud industrial heritage while creating good quality jobs for the people of Longbridge and beyond. This land stood derelict for too many years following the collapse of Rover. But now, thanks to investment from Indurent and others, it is being brought back to life with hundreds of new homes and workspaces for the benefit of the local community.'
Infrastructure and sustainability
The plans also aim to enhance local infrastructure by integrating the site with the River Rea valley walking and cycling routes, improving transport links to Birmingham and the wider West Midlands. Jess Evans, Planning Director at Indurent, commented: 'Breaking ground at Indurent Park Longbridge represents a pivotal moment in the transformation of this site. We are proud to be bringing forward a modern, sustainable employment hub that will attract high-growth industries and create hundreds of skilled jobs in the region.'
The redevelopment is seen as a key step in revitalizing Longbridge, blending new economic opportunities with the area's industrial legacy.
