Lidl has issued what it calls its 'most ambitious' announcement in history for all UK shoppers. The supermarket chain has released its Spring 2026 'wish list' of target locations, as it aims to add to its existing 1,000-store estate.

Lidl, which has Birmingham branches, said it is on the hunt for freehold, leasehold, or long-leasehold sites. The budget supermarket, which is rivalled by Aldi, Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and more, is even prepared to pay a 'finder's fee'.

Richard Taylor, Chief Real Estate Officer at Lidl GB, said: 'At Lidl GB, we currently have one of the most ambitious store opening programmes of any supermarket and we are more committed than ever to bringing our high quality and low priced products to even more communities across the country.' Mr Taylor added: 'All of our stores deliver more than just affordable products. Each one also brings quality jobs, opportunities for British suppliers to showcase the best of our home grown produce and support to local good causes in the communities each one serves.'

Site Requirements

Lidl's site requirements explain: 'Lidl has ambitious plans to open hundreds of new stores across Great Britain. This means we are looking to acquire sites that meet our standard store format requirements.' Prominent locations with easy access and strong pedestrian or traffic flow are preferred. The company is open to freehold, leasehold or long leasehold opportunities. Unit sizes between 18,000 and 26,500 sq ft with 100+ dedicated car parking spaces are needed. For standalone stores, 1.5+ acres are required, or up to 4 acres for mixed-use schemes. Town centre or edge of centre and retail parks are also targeted.

London Stores

For London stores, Lidl adds: 'Lidl trades over 130 stores in London and within the M25 with requirements for 200+ more stores, meaning we'll continue to be flexible on our store format.' Approx. 0.8+ acres for standalone stores or up to 4 acres for mixed-use schemes, with or without car parking and in close proximity to key public transport links.
