Aston Villa intensify contact for Mexico World Cup star Julian Quinones
Villa ramp up Quinones pursuit after World Cup displays

Aston Villa are intensifying their efforts to sign Mexico World Cup star Julian Quinones, although no official bid has yet been submitted, according to reports. The 29-year-old winger scored four goals for Mexico at the North American tournament, including one against England, before the Three Lions eliminated his side on Monday morning.

Scouts deployed at World Cup

Sky Sports Belgium journalist and transfer specialist Sacha Tavolieri claims that Villa used their scouts present at the World Cup to closely observe Quinones. The player’s goal haul equalled the record for a Mexican at a World Cup. Having represented Colombia at U20 level, Quinones moved to Mexico at age 17 and later opted to play for his adopted nation, earning 27 caps and scoring six goals.

Tavolieri wrote: "According to our information, Aston Villa's management, through their scouts present at the tournament, took advantage of the competition to closely observe the striker. Convinced by his level of performance, the English club made inquiries with the player's entourage to assess the feasibility of a potential transfer."

Growing interest but no offer yet

The journalist added: "Contacts between the various parties have recently intensified, demonstrating Aston Villa's growing interest in Quiñones. At this stage, however, no official offer has been made, but the situation could change in the coming weeks." Quinones currently plays for Saudi Pro League side Al-Qadsiah, where he scored an impressive 33 goals in 31 league appearances last season.

Premier League competition

Villa are not the only Premier League club linked with Quinones. According to Spanish outlet Marca, Chelsea have also shown interest in the World Cup star and are pursuing a deal. Villa’s ability to offer Champions League football is seen as a major advantage in what is expected to become a competitive transfer tussle in the coming weeks.
