Gap Group Creates Jobs with Yorkshire Recycling Expansion

Gap Group North East, a Gateshead-based recycling and haulage company, is creating eight new jobs as it opens its third site in Hessay, York, expanding into Yorkshire. The company specializes in recycling electronic waste (WEEE) and says the new facility strengthens its nationwide network, offering faster and more accessible electrical recycling services to customers across Yorkshire, the Midlands, the South of England, and Wales.

Strategic Expansion

The Yorkshire launch at Hessay Industrial Estate provides Gap Group with a central hub to significantly improve service for customers in those regions. Directors say it will reduce collection distances and unlock faster, more flexible processing for partners. This expansion adds to the company's existing processing facilities in Gateshead and Perthshire.

According to Nigel Tomlinson, commercial director of Gap Group North East, “As demand grows, our mission is to make sure every customer, wherever they are in the UK, receives the same level of service, speed, and compliance support. The Yorkshire site is about us providing what our customers need.”

Growing Demand for WEEE Processing

Demand for Gap Group’s processing services has grown significantly as regulatory pressure around WEEE compliance intensifies. Businesses, local authorities, compliance schemes, and brokers are seeking partners capable of handling increasing volumes across diverse waste streams. The new Yorkshire site will deliver benefits including more efficient transport routes, reduced mileage, and faster turnaround for collections.

The York opening comes a year after Gap Group secured a seven-figure funding package from HSBC UK to support its expansion into Scotland, which included building a fridge recycling plant near Perth. Two years prior, the company had secured a £10 million deal with HSBC to purchase a new 50,000 sq ft polymer and metal separation plant, leading to the creation of 20 jobs.
