Warwick named most sought-after Midlands area for families

New data has identified the Warwick district, including Leamington Spa and Kenilworth, as the most sought-after place to live for families in the Midlands. Over the last 12 months, more than 13,000 people moved to the area from elsewhere in England, the highest incoming migration compared with other parts of the region with similar populations.

Why families are choosing Warwick

The historic and scenic area is seen as a desirable spot for those who can afford it, offering quieter surroundings, lower crime rates, and access to top schools. While 11,000 people moved away from the Warwick district during the same period, the area still recorded a net migration increase of 2,000 residents.

New arrivals are likely to include families from Birmingham keen to leave the big city for a quieter environment, viewing Warwick and its surroundings as the perfect commuter spot. Leamington Spa, Warwick, and neighbouring Rugby are among the most popular commuter towns in the West Midlands.

Net migration rises in Rugby and Stratford

Rugby also saw significant inward movement, with net migration up by almost 2,400 as 8,400 people moved to the area. Meanwhile, the world-famous Stratford-upon-Avon attracted 10,500 new residents, resulting in a net rise of nearly 3,000.

These figures highlight a broader trend of families relocating within the Midlands in search of better living conditions, with the Warwick area leading the way in terms of desirability.

Birmingham's population loss

The data also revealed that 80,000 people left Birmingham over the 12-month period, while 63,000 arrived. This resulted in a net loss of 22,000 residents, though the figures do not include immigration from abroad.

The trend underscores the appeal of smaller towns and historic districts for families seeking a change of pace, while Birmingham continues to see significant out-movement to surrounding areas.
