Port of Tyne Reports Best Results in a Decade with £70m Revenue
Port of Tyne Reports Best Results in a Decade

The Port of Tyne has announced its strongest financial results in a decade, with revenue increasing by 5% to £70m, according to its latest annual report. The port's EBITDA rose 11% to £18.6m, while overall profit surged 39% to £7.15m, up from £5.14m the previous year.

Strong Operational Performance Across Key Sectors

Port bosses attributed the robust results to strong operational performance across automotive, bulk cargo, and offshore wind. The report highlighted additional VW Audi imports secured through a long-term partnership and successful cruise and ferry operations, including landmark calls by Fred Olsen's Borealis and Ambassador Cruise Line's Ambience. The latter was the largest vessel to undergo dry-docking on the River Tyne in over two decades.

Offshore Wind and Strategic Developments

The port secured significant contract successes in offshore wind, supporting Ørsted's Hornsea 3 marshalling operations with Cadeler. Strategic progress included a memorandum of understanding to establish a North East Ports Partnership, expansion of the 2050 Maritime Innovation Hub and Venture Connect programme, and a global collaboration agreement signed in Tokyo with the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority and Hitachi to advance a clean e-fuels hub.

Sustainability and Decarbonisation Efforts

The Port of Tyne reduced its carbon emissions by 65% over six years and remains committed to becoming a net zero business by 2030. It received national sustainability recognition with two awards: the British Ports Association Sustainability Award in 2025 and an Exceptional Contribution Award for its Innovation Hub team.

Capital Investment and Future Plans

The financial year saw the port commit £14m in capital expenditure across power infrastructure, digital systems, and estate development. It also purchased the UK's first fully-electric foiling pilot vessel from Artemis Technologies, reflecting a continued focus on efficiency, decarbonisation, and digital innovation.

Matt Beeton, CEO of the Port of Tyne, said: "Despite ongoing global economic uncertainty in 2025, the port delivered its strongest financial results in a decade. Looking ahead, we have ambitious plans for further growth. At London International Shipping Week, we unveiled proposals for a £150m expansion of Tyne Clean Energy Park. This nationally significant project could support up to 12,000 jobs and contribute £5.6bn to the UK economy."

He added: "2025 was an impressive year and showed how the port has evolved from its coal-focused activities to continued success in new areas like offshore wind, green technology, and automotive. Securing the Hornsea 3 contract further enhances our established position in the offshore wind market. The development pipeline has been recently expanded by the addition of the 6GW North East development area. In response to the substantial potential this represents for the region, we are advancing plans for a proposed £150m extension of Tyne Clean Energy Park. This will establish the River Tyne as a central hub in the UK's energy sector for decades to come."

Beeton also thanked outgoing chair of the board, Lucy Armstrong, saying: "With the conclusion of Lucy's third term as chair, I want to thank her for her leadership and the enduring impact she has made on the continued success of the Port of Tyne."

Ms Armstrong said: "I am delighted to report on a successful year for the port, with strong performance and clear progress against our long-term ambitions. This is entirely down to the dedication and professionalism of my port colleagues. As a trust port, we serve a broad and diverse group of stakeholders – our customers, communities, the wider region, as well as future generations. Over the past year we have again demonstrated the strength of that purpose by placing collaboration, innovation and sustainability at the heart of everything we do."
