This coordinated law enforcement action forms part of Operation Switch Off, an extensive initiative led by the District Prosecutor's Office of Catania and Italian State Police, targeting sophisticated streaming piracy operations that have been siphoning millions from legitimate broadcasters and rights holders.
International Operation Targets Streaming Piracy Network
The sweeping investigation has identified 31 suspects across 14 nations, including the United Kingdom, Spain, Romania, Canada, and India. Law enforcement agencies successfully infiltrated and dismantled a complex illegal streaming network that offered premium sports and entertainment content at heavily discounted rates, typically between €10 to €15 monthly. These unauthorized services, known locally in Italy as pezzotto, have been operating on an industrial scale, undermining the entire sports broadcasting ecosystem.
Industry Leaders Applaud Enforcement Action
Ed McCarthy, Chief Operating Officer at sports streaming platform DAZN, has publicly commended the international operation, highlighting its importance in protecting the sports industry. "Operation Switch Off demonstrates the power of coordinated global action in confronting large-scale piracy networks that damage the entire sports ecosystem," McCarthy told Advanced Television. "Illegal IPTV services don't just steal from rights holders – they undermine investment in the sports and entertainment audiences love, and they expose fans to fraud and cyber threats."
The crackdown follows previous enforcement measures, including DAZN's initiative last year that saw 2,000 users receive registered letters demanding €500 in damages after a major investigation by Italy's Guardia di Finanza uncovered widespread use of illegal IPTV platforms. Broadcast regulator AGCOM Commissioner Massimiliano Capitanio has indicated this represents merely the beginning of broader industry enforcement, with Sky Italia and football leagues preparing similar legal measures against piracy.
UK Anti-Piracy Efforts Intensify
In the United Kingdom, the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) has been instrumental in coordinating many of the organised raids targeting illegal streaming operations. The organisation maintains constant vigilance over the digital landscape to combat unauthorized streaming activities across the UK and Ireland. "We utilise a range of methods to identify individuals engaged in unauthorised businesses that offer access to illegal streams," a FACT representative explained, emphasising their ongoing commitment to protecting intellectual property rights.
This latest enforcement action represents a significant escalation in the battle against digital piracy, demonstrating how international cooperation can effectively disrupt sophisticated criminal networks that have long exploited technological advancements to distribute copyrighted content illegally.
