Sky has announced that millions of its customers can now use their mobile data, calls, and texts in 120 holiday destinations at no extra cost. This offer is exclusively available to Sky VIP Diamond customers who have been with the company for more than 15 years and have an existing or new Sky Mobile plan.
What Is Sky's Free Global Roaming Offer?
The free global roaming benefit activates automatically when an eligible customer uses 10MB of data or makes a call or sends a text to a UK number while in one of the supported destinations. According to Sky, “Free Global Roaming is automatically applied when eligible customers use roaming in a Roaming Passport Plus destination.” Customers can use up to 25GB of data per billing cycle while roaming. If they exceed this limit, additional data will be charged at standard roaming rates.
Which Destinations Are Included?
The 120 destinations span Europe, the USA, Australia, Thailand, India, and many more popular holiday spots. Sky confirms that VIP Diamond customers can use their UK allowance in all Roaming Passport Plus (RPP) destinations abroad at no additional daily charge. “If you're eligible, we’ll text you when you arrive in a supported destination,” Sky said. The free roaming covers data, calls, and texts just as they would be used at home.
How Does the Free Roaming Work?
Eligible customers do not need to sign up separately. Sky sends a welcome SMS upon arrival in a supported destination with details about charges. As a top tip, Sky advises: “You can start using your plan as soon as you land. Top Tip: If you're not receiving Free Global Roaming, try switching Airplane Mode on your mobile on and off.” The free roaming is automatically applied when customers use roaming in a Roaming Passport Plus destination.
Eligibility for Sky VIP Diamond Customers
Sky VIP Diamond status is based on how long a customer has held Sky TV, Mobile, Talk, Smart Home, or Broadband services. Those with over 15 years of loyalty qualify for the Diamond tier. Customers can check their tier via their Sky account. If eligible, they will receive a text message confirming free global roaming when they arrive in a supported destination.
What If You Are Not a VIP Diamond Customer?
For all other customers, or where eligibility criteria are not met, Sky offers the Roaming Passport Plus pass for £2 per day. This allows access to UK allowances abroad in the same supported destinations. Sky notes that standard roaming charges apply if no pass is purchased. The £2 daily rate provides a cost-effective alternative for staying connected while traveling.
Key Details to Remember
Sky states: “When you travel abroad, we'll try to send you a Welcome text when you arrive at your destination with details about roaming charges.” Customers should ensure their device has roaming enabled. The 25GB cap applies per billing cycle, not per trip, so heavy data users should monitor their usage. For those eligible, the benefit provides significant savings compared to standard roaming fees, which can run into pounds per megabyte in some countries.
