£10.4m Boost for Anglesey as Amlwch Marine Terminal Revamp Gets Green Light
£10.4m Anglesey marine building transformation approved

A major regeneration scheme for Anglesey has cleared a crucial hurdle, with £10.4 million in funding approved to transform a former marine building and create new commercial space.

Project Details and Economic Impact

Ambition North Wales has given the green light to the business case for the project, which is spearheaded by the Isle of Anglesey County Council. The centrepiece is the refurbishment of the old Marine Terminal Building at Amlwch port. Alongside this, the plan includes constructing ten new business units at a nearby industrial estate.

The developments are forecast to have a significant economic impact, supporting the creation of 95 new jobs and providing 23,000 square feet of new commercial floorspace. It is projected to boost the North Wales economy by £33.9 million by 2036.

Funding and Next Steps

The project is backed by the North Wales Growth Deal, overseen by Ambition North Wales. With the business case approved, the initiative can now proceed to procurement and finalise a joint venture agreement between the council and the Welsh Government.

The funding package combines £6.99 million from the Growth Deal with contributions from the Welsh Government, Isle of Anglesey County Council, and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).

Procurement via the North Wales Construction Partnership is slated to begin later this month, with a contractor expected to be appointed in March. If all goes to plan, construction will start in April, aiming for completion in the spring of next year.

Leadership and Strategic Vision

Jason McLellan, lead member for Ambition North Wales’s land and property programme, stated the approval marked a significant step forward for Anglesey. He emphasised the project's role in providing high-quality business spaces, creating jobs, and attracting investment to an area with great potential.

Leader of Isle of Anglesey County Council, Gary Pritchard, called it vital investment for Amlwch and North Anglesey. He said the modern, flexible spaces would help local businesses grow and play a central role in revitalising the local economy.

Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Evans highlighted the project as part of a bold regeneration vision, backed by £120 million of Welsh Government funding through the Growth Deal. Wales Office Minister Anna McMorrin said driving growth and creating jobs was the UK Government's number one mission, supported by its investment in the Deal.

Jamie Reed, NDA director of socio-economics, expressed pride in supporting the transformational developments, which will boost the local economy, create employment, and preserve heritage.
