Dorset Innovation Park Awaits MoD Funding for Major Job Growth and Expansion

A substantial increase in employment at Dorset Innovation Park is anticipated to materialise next year, contingent upon the Ministry of Defence finalising its future spending plans. Councillors have been informed that a delay in MoD spending decisions is currently preventing a major expansion on the site, which already has planning approval. Other potential developments are also poised to proceed as soon as funding is confirmed.

Defence-Related Companies and Site Developments

Several companies operating within the park are defence-related, focusing on the development of autonomous and semi-autonomous machines for land, sea, and air applications. The Dorset Council-owned enterprise zone has recently completed the acquisition of additional adjacent land, with ongoing discussions about attracting a hotel, following a consultant's report indicating commercial viability.

Further discussions include plans for a new gatehouse, addressing a current drawback at the Winfrith site, and a proposal to establish a catering outlet, potentially located at the Battlelab facility.

Education Partnerships and Business Support

Approaches are being made to establish a permanent education satellite facility on the park, with discussions involving Bournemouth University, Yeovil College, and Plymouth University. Councillors on the shareholders committee were informed that Fareham Borough Council's similar business park experienced significant growth after securing a permanent higher education facility.

Businesses already operating at the Dorset site are supportive of securing an education partner, which would assist with workplace training programmes. Many have indicated that such a partnership is crucial for future job creation and staff retention.

Transport Links and Management Progress

Outstanding issues include improving public transport links to the site from surrounding areas. Priority is being given to connections from Wool railway station to the Innovation Park, with proposals under consideration such as establishing a bus route and exploring alternative options like hire electric bikes and scooters.

Dorset Council's portfolio holder for finance, Councillor Simon Clifford, expressed being 'heartened' by the progress made by the company that will eventually assume day-to-day management of the site. This responsibility is currently shared with Dorset Council officers.
