Fake Meta and Spotify Job Offers Used in Dangerous Hacking Scam
Fake Job Offers from Meta and Spotify Used in Hacking Scam

A new wave of scams is targeting UK jobseekers with fake job offers from major brands like Meta, Disney, Coca-Cola, and Spotify. Cybersecurity firm NordVPN warns that these fraudulent listings are designed to steal social media login credentials through a deceptive application process.

How the Scam Works

Scammers create convincing websites mimicking official job portals, using AI to replicate branding and job listings. Unsuspecting applicants are tricked into providing their Facebook or other social media logins, which are then used to hack accounts. Once compromised, these accounts can be used to spread scams to friends and family or commit identity fraud.

Expert Warnings

Marijus Briedis, Chief Technology Officer at NordVPN, explains: "Periods of economic uncertainty create perfect conditions for such scams. Trust in recruitment messages increases, making people more vulnerable. This campaign is particularly dangerous because it replicates a real hiring process."

Colette Mason, an AI consultant, notes that UK unemployment is at a five-year high, making jobseekers more susceptible. She adds: "AI has made scams indistinguishable from genuine offers. Always go directly to the company's careers page and never authenticate via social media."

Rising Threat

Lloyds Bank reported a 237% increase in job scams last year. Experts urge jobseekers to verify all unsolicited offers and treat any request for login details as suspicious. Companies and platforms must take greater responsibility for preventing fake listings, but until then, vigilance is key.
