The conclusion of 24 Hours in Police Custody airs tonight, uncovering the chilling motive behind a brutal attack on a 17-year-old boy in Luton. Police reveal the violence was a pre-planned ambush linked to a turf war between rival drug gangs, leaving the victim with severe and permanent injuries.
Attackers' Motive Revealed as Gang Turf War
The victim was discovered on 2 June 2022 in the early hours of the morning near a railway bridge in Luton. He had been left for dead, with no one at the scene. Initially believed to be a hit-and-run victim, his injuries—entirely contained to his head—quickly led detectives to suspect otherwise.
Reviewing CCTV footage from a nearby car park, police saw the victim getting into a vehicle with an associate for a few minutes before they got out and walked off. A second vehicle, a BMW, then appeared on the footage, driving towards them. Four masked men armed with weapons, including baseball bats, jumped out. Two of the men caught up with the victim under a railway bridge, where they attacked him out of sight of cameras.

One Jailed, Others Still at Large
Despite an extensive investigation by Bedfordshire Police, the boy's attackers remain unknown four years on. Only one person has been jailed for their involvement: the getaway driver, Mohammed Hamid, 50. Hamid was already in prison for an unrelated matter when he was found guilty of driving the attackers away from the scene at Luton Crown Court earlier this year in February. He was found guilty of conspiracy to cause GBH with intent and sentenced to 10 years and nine months.
Police are still trying to trace the others involved. Former Det Sgt Thomas Hamm, who led the investigation for Bedfordshire Police, said: “Ultimately this case isn’t closed. So my plea to the public on behalf of my colleagues who remain in force is this: if you know anything about this incident or have information on the outstanding offenders, now is the time to speak up. It has been four years, I’ve no doubt that those involved will have spoken about this and someone out there knows exactly what took place. I urge you to speak to the police or report completely anonymously via Crimestoppers.”
Victim's Life-Altering Injuries and Permanent Impact
Despite having life-saving surgery and coming out of his coma, the teen has been left facing challenges that no young person should ever have to endure. The victim has severe and life-altering injuries and continues to suffer significant memory loss.
After the court case in 2026, Det Sgt Thomas Hamm said: “This was a shocking and ruthless attack on a teenager, carried out with clear planning and intent. The level of violence inflicted has had a devastating and permanent impact on the victim’s life. Despite life‑saving surgery, he continues to live with severe, life‑altering injuries, including significant memory loss, and faces challenges that no young person should ever have to endure. The consequences for him and his family are profound and long‑lasting.”
