Sainsbury's Announces Major Pay Increase for Hourly-Paid Colleagues from March 2026

Sainsbury's has confirmed a significant investment in its workforce with a new pay rule set to take effect from March 2026. The supermarket giant will implement a 5 per cent pay increase for hourly-paid colleagues, elevating national hourly rates to a record-breaking £13.23 and London rates to an unprecedented £14.54. This substantial uplift is projected to provide full-time hourly-paid employees with over £1,200 in additional annual earnings.

Above-Inflation Increase Reinforces Sector Leadership

This year's 5 per cent pay rise notably exceeds current inflation rates, building upon several years of considerable investment in colleague remuneration. The move solidifies Sainsbury's position as a leader within the retail sector regarding employee compensation. Over the past five years, the retailer has increased pay by an impressive 42 per cent, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to supporting colleague wellbeing and success through competitive wages and a robust benefits package.

Comprehensive Benefits Package Enhances Total Reward

In addition to the pay rise, Sainsbury's offers a comprehensive benefits package that rivals those of competitors such as Aldi, Asda, Morrisons, Lidl, and Tesco. This package includes a pension scheme, a share-save scheme, free food during shifts, and colleague discounts. These discounts alone enable staff to save over £600 annually on an £80 weekly shop, significantly enhancing the overall value of their employment.

Leadership and Union Response to the Pay Announcement

Simon Roberts, Chief Executive of Sainsbury's, emphasised the central role of colleagues in the business's success. He stated, "Our colleagues are at the heart of our business. Their hard work, dedication and commitment have driven our strong momentum and helped us win grocery market share growth for the sixth consecutive Christmas period. I'm delighted to share that we will be raising pay for our hourly-paid colleagues by five per cent this year. This increase reflects our commitment to rewarding our colleagues for their exceptional service and productivity."

Joanne Thomas, Usdaw General Secretary, welcomed the announcement, highlighting the union's valued relationship with Sainsbury's. She commented, "Usdaw has a longstanding and valued relationship with Sainsbury's and we welcome today's announcement of an above inflation pay rise. Our members are key workers in their communities and crucial to the success of the business. It is only right they are fairly rewarded for their hard work, a case that Usdaw has consistently made in pay talks with the company."

The pay increase is set to benefit colleagues across Sainsbury's branches nationwide, including those in Birmingham, further underscoring the retailer's investment in its workforce as a cornerstone of its operational strategy.
