St John Ambulance is launching a pilot project in London to test the use of paid casual staff with advanced first aid qualifications to supplement its volunteer workforce during peak periods at public events. The initiative aims to help the charity manage growing demand for medical cover while maintaining its high standard of care.
Pilot Scheme Details
The temporary trial will explore new ways to support medical teams during busy times across the capital. Organisers want to create a flexible working model that safely combines traditional volunteers with temporary paid workers, ensuring volunteers remain at the core of everyday services while adding extra support when needed.
Applicants for the temporary roles must already hold a recognised advanced first aid qualification. These workers will step in to provide extra help so that medical cover can be provided at a wider number of community events.
Strategic Goals
The scheme supports the charity's long-term plan to deliver vital treatment to more than 70,000 patients every year by 2028. By boosting workforce numbers during peak times, St John Ambulance aims to strengthen its capacity and reach more patients.
Gareth Barker, head of event healthcare at the charity, said: "Our volunteers remain at the heart of St John Ambulance and this pilot is not about replacing volunteer roles."
He added: "By combining our dedicated volunteers with a small pool of qualified paid responders, we can strengthen our capacity, support more events and reach more patients while continuing to put volunteers at the centre of everything we do."
